Yard and garden spring cleanup collection delayed

Island Waste Management Corporation (IWMC) is delaying the spring cleanup collection of yard debris, due to late spring conditions.

“Delaying the spring cleanup will give Islanders additional time to tend to yard and garden cleanup,” said Gerry Moore, Chief Executive Officer of Island Waste Management Corporation. “We strive to provide the best possible service to homeowners, so cooperating with Mother Nature’s schedule is the right thing to do.”

Yard debris will now be collected during the weeks of May 18 and May 25. Materials must be curbside by Monday of each week, and trucks will travel each collection route once each week. Waste Cleanup Week remains unchanged. Collection for bulkier waste items will begin Monday, May 11th as scheduled.

Customers are reminded to keep waste and compostables separate at curbside and to bundle items such as branches and twigs in bundles no larger than 50 lbs. and 4 feet. Compostables may be placed in open rigid containers or in paper yard and garden bags. Yard material in plastic bags will not be collected.

Waste material may be placed in open rigid containers or in clear transparent bags. Bulk items, no larger than 50 lbs. and/or 4 feet, may be placed directly at curbside for collection. Items requiring special disposal will not be collected. This includes household hazardous waste, items exceeding 50 lbs and/or 4 feet, tires, electronics, metals, construction material, or materials from businesses or farms.

“The spring cleanup provides an opportunity for Islanders to dispose material not accepted during regular collection, so homeowners can properly prepare their yards for and after the growing season,” said Moore. “Delaying the yard cleanup collection will help ensure we have cleaner and tidier communities later when the snow disappears and the ground dries up.”

Volumes collected during cleanup usually exceed 3300 metric tonnes annually, over 7 million lbs., and represent approximately 400 truckloads of materials.
