Fishing season opens April 15

Despite the long winter and deep snow still blanketing much of the province, the fishing season will open as usual on April 15.

"April 15th has been an important day for generations of Islanders," said Brad Potter, Manager of Fish and Wildlife programs for the Department of Agriculture and Forestry.. "After a long winter, opening day provides the perfect reason to enjoy a day outdoors fishing with friends and family."

Potter said that safety is an important concern this year as many bays, rivers and ponds are still ice covered. As spring progresses the ice is becoming more and more unstable. Falling onto the cold spring water can quickly lead to hypothermia and even death, unless people are able to get out and warmed up again quickly.

Deep snow also remains in many Island fields, forests and back roads. Anglers who plan to travel through these areas should let someone know where they plan to go and when they plan to get back. A cell phone is also recommended in case trouble arises. The deep snow that remains in many locations can also make walking difficult so snow shoes may help to access some fishing spots.

Everyone is advised to consult the 2015 Angling Summary for any new regulations or restrictions before they go out fishing. 2015 angling licenses are available at retail outlets across the Island and on-line at www.gov.pe.ca/forestry/licence
